Case Study: Delivering Critical First Aid Training for Offshore Wind Operations

The Challenge

An offshore wind client required first aid training for their vessel crew following the mobilisation of an RMI medic. The crew faced a potential gap in essential emergency readiness, particularly given the remote, high-risk nature of offshore operations.

Approach

RMI’s onboard medic stepped up and immediately integrated herself into the vessel’s health and safety workshop. Recognising both the importance and the opportunity, she designed and delivered a comprehensive first aid training programme tailored to the realities of offshore work.

To set context and establish engagement, the session opened with an overview of Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest (OHCA) statistics, focusing on survival rates and the life-saving impact of early intervention. This initial discussion served multiple purposes:

  • Assessing the crew’s baseline knowledge
  • Identifying and addressing misconceptions or perceived barriers to administering CPR
  • Emphasising the importance of confident, rapid response in isolated offshore environments

Building on this foundation, the medic delivered a structured, scenario-based CPR framework specific to offshore conditions. She followed this with a full practical demonstration, ensuring every participant performed CPR with real-time feedback, guidance, and encouragement.

Participants demonstrated clear improvements in both confidence and understanding of CPR principles: outcomes directly attributable to the medic’s proactive approach, dynamic delivery, and ability to contextualise training for high-risk, offshore environments.

RMI’s client was impressed not only with the quality and professionalism of the training but also with the medic’s initiative. She maximised downtime, such as weather-related delays, by conducting additional sessions for the project team and contractors, further enhancing safety readiness across the operation.

The client benefited from increased capability, a strengthened health and safety culture, and a versatile medic who turned a potential coverage gap into a valuable training opportunity.

"A positive session held by the RMI medic on board the SOV. She integrated herself into the ship's safety session to deliver first aid training to the SOV crew."
